Reader’s Question:

What is the lowest possible coverage I could get for my Texas vehicle insurance? What will be the consequence if my insurance goes below that coverage?

Bertha

Dallas, TX

Last April 2008, the Minimum Insurance Law of Texas increased its minimum liability. The revised law requires all Texas vehicle insurance to carry a $25,000 worth of liability for one person, $50,000 for two or more insured persons, and $25,000 for property damages. This coverage is called 25/50/25 coverage. Prior to this revised law, the state requires every vehicle insurance to carry 20/40/15 coverage.

If you get an insurance policy, you will be required to get this minimum liability coverage. I’m not sure if it’s possible to get a policy that has a lower coverage because all insurance companies know about the minimum insurance law. But you should make it clear to the insurance company that you want to get at least the minimum coverage just to be sure that you’re not violating the state law.

In Dallas, if you were caught violating the minimum insurance law, you will definitely face some serious penalties. For the first violation, you will be asked to pay a fine between $175 to $300. But for your succeeding violations, the fine could go up to $1000 (depending on how serious you’re the violation is). And if you fail to get the right insurance coverage even after a couple of citations, your driving license could be suspended and your vehicle could be impounded.

Reader’s Question:

I have a son who’s applying for his own vehicle insurance, but it appears that he’s having a hard time getting cheap car insurance. Is this normal for young drivers?

Justine

Dallas, TX

Texas vehicle insurance for young drivers is really expensive compared to those of older drivers. It is because young drivers like your son are considered as high risk by insurers. This means that insurance companies charge higher rates to young drivers compared to older drivers.

Why are young drivers considered as high risk? It is due to several reasons. First, they do not have the lengthy driving record to speak of. Since they have been driving for just several years or even months, it is safe to assume that young drivers cannot show good driving records. This makes it harder for Texas vehicle insurance companies to gauge how responsible they are on the road. The most likely result is that Texas vehicle insurance firms will charge them with high premium rates for their lack of lengthy driving history.

Another reason why young drivers are considered high risk is because they are generally perceived as careless on the road. Because of their age, young drivers can be inexperienced on the road, making them more likely to be involved in car accidents and damages.

Reader’s Question:

I have young driver car insurance. I’ve been doing my best to keep a clean driving record to make sure that I’ll be paying not so much on my car insurance premiums. What I’d like to know is, what am I supposed to do if my young driver car insurance in Texas fails? I’m just trying to be realistic. With the financial crisis that is happening everywhere, I guess there is a possibility that it will happen. So, I just wanna be ready. Thanks!

Rosalyn

Corpus Christi, TX

I really hope that your young driver car insurance in Texas won’t fail or becomes insolvent. Oh, insolvent by the way, is the legal term to use if your car insurance in Texas is no longer capable of paying its bills and any other financial obligations like auto insurance claims to its policyholders.

This question is quite difficult. I’ve made some research about this just to make sure I’ll give you only accurate information. And I found out that (this is according to the Texas Department of Insurance) if your young driver car insurance in Texas becomes insolvent, an Austin district judge would place your insurance company in what they call “receivership”. This will legally authorize the Texas Commissioner of Insurance to take in charge of the said insurance company and try to save the company. If it cannot be saved, the Commissioner of Insurance may then opt to get someone, a Special Deputy Receiver (SDR), to sell the company’s asset to pay the creditor of the company.

If you have car insurance claims with a company that is in “receivership”, it will be paid by guaranty associations. For more information about on how to deal with insolvent young driver car insurance in Texas, it’s best to check with the Texas Department of Insurance.
