Reader’s Question:

How are you? My name is Christopher Harrison and I would like to know if I could be added to the auto insurance of my father since I’ve only got a learners permit in Texas.

Christopher Harrison

Aransas Pass, TX

I’m doing well, Chris! Thank you for asking!

A driver’s or a learner’s permit is a requirement and is a temporary license with certain restrictions for the driver. If your father lets you drive his vehicle, your father would have work on it to add you for the coverage required by insurance law in Texas.

A driver’s permit comes with all the responsibilities to operate motor vehicles on public roads. When one purchased an auto policy, part of the contract requires that within 30 days, they should be notified in case of any change in risk factors associated with the policy.

Failure to add a new driver to the policy will disqualify one to avail the security benefits they should get but some cases may be considered.

I actually got into the similar situation. I acquired my learner’s permit and my father called up the insurance company to ask if I am covered by the policy he purchased. The company replied that as long as my father was there beside me teaching me while behind the wheels, I am covered by the policy. It is just during the learning process but once I’ll be able to get my driving license that is when I have to be added as an additional driver to my father’s policy.

Please relay this matter to your father and our forum is always open for questions.
