Reader’s Question:

My daughter is turning 19 next year and I am thinking of buying her a 2nd hand car as a birthday gift. Should I insure the car on my name even though she is the one gonna drive it or should I insure it on her name? I’d like to know if the owner of the car can affect the insurance rate that auto insurance company will be charging so I can save some on cash.

A: There are factors that can affect auto insurance rates, from age to marital status, gender, and even the area where you are living. Chances are, if you are single, the car insurance company will charge you higher compared if you’re married. High-risk single driver obviously will be charged with higher auto insurance rate. Age will also deal a great role on acquiring auto insurance rate. If you compare a twenty three year old to a twenty nine year old insurer and both have the same driving record, the older person will get the inexpensive auto insurance rate. When it comes to gender, female drivers tend to acquire cheaper insurance rates. Maybe because of their driving habits differ from a male.

The area where you live in also influences your auto insurance rate as well. If you live in an area where traffic is higher, has a high crime rate, there is a chance that your rate will go beyond the ordinary. High crime rate may even cause reason to deny insurance. Another factor to consider is your driving habits or records. If you have records of driving accidents and driving citations, your insurance rate will be higher. But some insurance companies sometimes lower rates as a drivers record improves.

The type or class and how old your vehicle are also factors that auto insurance company look upon. If you compare a new SUV to a fifteen year old Chevy pick-up truck, insurance company will charge the old pick-up truck at a lower rate. Using your personal vehicle for doing business purposes will more likely to cost you much on auto insurance.
